Description

Details

Velox Motorsports has engineered and produced a track ready performance brake cooling kit for the 2013+ FR-S / BRZ. This kit is also available with just the backing plate for customers that want to customize their setups on their own.

Development

Starting from a clean slate with a solid idea in place, we wanted to design an OEM like installed cooling kit that maximizes cooling with as short of routing as possible. We also wanted to ensure it fit both big brake rotors and stock rotors alike. Doing our best to keep cost a forefront thought, we set into designing the kit you see tested in the video.

Using tuft testing we were able to visualize the flow and effectiveness of the inlet into the brake duct kit as well as the backing plate and carbon duct through the internal rotor vanes.

Thermal Imaging

Using thermal imaging, we were able to test four conditions with the brake cooling kit. To keep the tests consistent, the passenger side had the full brake kit installed while the driver’s side was left OEM.

Testing Strategy

Two control tests were mapped out that we believe accurately depicts the abilities of the duct kit in two severe cases and two cool down cases. Two speeds were tested, a 40 MPH low speed test, and a 75 MPH high speed test. This was to map out two different airflow rates, higher vehicle speeds translates to more airflow into the brake rotor via our kit. At each speed we tested two cases, a severe braking case and a cool down case. The severe braking case involved power braking with an engine load of 1.0 (constant load between the two tests) for 1 mile straight. The cool down case involved driving the same road the opposite direction with using as little brake as possible. At the end of each case, we would quickly gather thermal images of the brake rotor. In between the 40 MPH low speed test and the 75 MPH high speed test, we ensure the brake rotors equalized in temperature.

Please note time and date stamp added from the thermal image camera, pictures of one another.

Conclusion

Via tuft testing and thermal image testing it’s quite clear that the brake cooling kit is highly effective even when used with the OEM rotors which have quite small vanes when compared to those of big brake kits. Smaller vanes will hurt flow and cooling due to the reduced size.

With the brake cooling kit, the rotors remained much cooler directly after applying the brakes as well as after a short drive without using the brakes. It is also apparent that at high rates of speed, the brake cooling kit does significantly more than at lower speeds. This makes a lot of sense as the kit works by using frontal ambient air and funneling it into the center of the rotor. At higher speeds, pressure and flow rates are greater than at low speeds.

We have heard reports back from customers tracking their cars having reduced brake fade, reduced rotor cracking, improved pad wear, and reduced brake fluid boiling. As a result, this is a great kit to help keep brake components at an appropriate temperature during competition and/or track days.

A0049A - BACKING PLATE KIT

With the stainless backing plate for durability and properly formed and located dry carbon duct directing air into the center of the rotor, this is a great start to a do it yourself brake cooling kit. Increase endurance, life expectancy, resistance to brake fade, and resistance to boiling brake fluid by hooking up a 2.5" silicone brake hose to these backing plates and running cool air through the rotors. Designed to work with OEM and aftermarket big brake kits, this is a must for those looking to get the most from their brakes. Stainless hardware throughout and hard anodized aluminum spacers ensure the kit will remain rust free for the life of the units.

NOTE: In some severe cases backing plate may need trimmed. IE: AP sprint kit with whiteline roll center adjusters due to lower control arm to rotor clearance being less than the thickness of the backing plate. AP Sprint BBK will fit without trimming on stock ball joints.

CONSTRUCTION:
  • Stainless backing plate
  • Dry carbon air duct
  • Hard anodized spacers
  • Stainless hardware
  • Foam for ABS sensor wire shielding
FEATURES:
  • Dry carbon duct directing air into the center of the rotor
  • Stainless backing plate further encouraging airflow into center of rotor
  • Standard 2.5" brake duct hoses fit on duct

A0037A - Full Brake Cooling Kit

A well thought out and executed brake cooling kit which installs in an OEM type format with an emphasis on shortest route possible, maximizing cooling, and increasing the brake's ability to do their job by keeping them at a more reasonable temperature. Using the OEM fog lights as the inlet to the kit and a well formed duct in the inner fender line this is the brake cooling kit to have. At the knuckle the stainless backing plate and well formed carbon duct direct cool air into the center of the rotor to maximize cooling benefits. Kit comes with everything necessary for an install, including pre-cut hoses to length.

Special Notes:

  • OEM or similar fog light bezel is necessary for a seamless install. Winjet sells these for FR-S for $20 for both sides, Subaru sells these for the BRZ for $40 for both units.
  • Depending on wheels/tires/suspension setup, steering rack limiters may need to be installed (included in kit).
  • In some severe cases backing plate may need trimmed. IE: AP sprint kit with whiteline roll center adjusters due to lower control arm to rotor clearance being less than the thickness of the backing plate. AP Sprint BBK will fit without trimming on stock ball joints.
  • Requires removal and / or relocation of the windshield washer reservoir. Like many turbocharger and supercharger installs, additional room is needed behind the driver's side turn signal for ducting.
Construction:
  • Stainless backing plate
  • Dry carbon air duct
  • Hard plastic fender ducts (pancake duct)
  • Hard plastic fog light ducts
  • Pre-cut to size 3" and 2.5" brake duct hose (Neoprene for foglight, high temp silicone for backing plate)
  • All necessary hardware included
Features:
  • Dry carbon duct directing air into the center of the rotor
  • Stainless backing plate further encouraging airflow into center of rotor
  • OEM type install
  • Installs in a few hours with minimal hand tools and know how
  • Extremely short routing for cooling brakes with maximum efficiency
